The Ukrainian army struck at Russian forces on Kinburn Spit, Mykolayiv Oblast, after those shelled nearby Ochakiv on Jan. 9, Ukraine’s Operational Command South spokesperson Natalia Humeniuk told Ukrainian TV station Channel 24 on Jan. 10.

According to Humeniuk, Russian forces attacked Ochakiv in retaliation for a recent Ukrainian attack on their military equipment and troops. She explained that enemy troops repeatedly enter the spit to shell Ukrainian cities, before immediately fleeing to avoid a counterattack.

"Yesterday, we worked again on their positions there; they received the response for their actions," said Humeniuk.

In recent days, Moscow’s forces ramped up drone reconnaissance around Ochakiv, Humeniuk added.

Russia attacked Ochakiv with artillery on Jan. 9, damaging a local hospital and at least 100 homes. Preliminary reports suggest 15 people were injured, including a child.
