Russia could use chemical weapons during the war with Ukraine, but Ukraine is prepared for this eventuality, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov said on April 2.
Speaking on Ukrainian television, he noted that Russia had used chemical weapons in Syria, despite the prohibition of their use by all international bodies.
“We have a clear understanding that they can do this in our country. We shall be prepared for this,” Danilov said.
He said Ukrainian medics have undergone training to treat victims of chemical weapons attacks, although he said he hoped they would not have to use it.
Earlier, NV reported that Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg said that the Russia is trying to create a pretext for the use of chemical weapons.
U.S. President Joe Biden also said this was a real threat, and said that the United States would “respond” if Russian dictator Vladimir Putin decided to use chemical weapons in Ukraine.
