Ukrainian border guards have repelled an attack by invading Russian forces on a fortified position near the town of Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service reported on the Telegram messenger on Feb. 22.

According to the border guards, 10 Russian invaders were killed during the failed enemy attack.

The Ukrainian military also captured a mercenary from Russia’s Wagner mercenary company.

In footage released by the border agency, the captured mercenary admitted that he had spent almost all of his adult life in prison. Wagner was earlier reported to have recruited up to 50,000 prisoners in Russian jails to make up for its losses on the battlefield.

Bakhmut remains one of the hottest spots on the frontline. Russian invasion forces transferred numerous military units to attack there in an attempt to break through Ukrainian defensive lines and encircle the town.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Feb. 3 that Ukrainian defenders have no plans to withdraw from Bakhmut.

On Feb. 15, Zelenskyy said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are struggling in this area, but are holding on.
