Ukrainian boxing star Usyk defeats Joshua on points, defends titles

Ukrainian boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk defeated UK opponent Anthony Joshua in a hard-fought match on Aug. 21, successfully defending his WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO world champion titles.

Usyk took the initiative during the first round, but Joshua managed to land a heavy punch in the second.

Nevertheless, by the 4 th round Usyk had adopted his trademark fast-paced aggressive posture, landing several surgical blows.

Joshua went on the offensive in 8 th and 9 th rounds, delivering a series of precise punches.

Eventually, having withstood his opponent’s onslaught, Usyk reclaimed intuitive once again.

The two heavyweights were closely matched, which was reflected in a split judges’ decision, who awarded the ultimate victory to Usyk on points: 113–115, 115–113, and 116–112.
