Russian troops used chemical irritant munitions against Ukrainian forces near Avdiivka, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service reported on Telegram on May 26.
Despite the chemical attack, the Ukrainian Armed Forces and border guards repelled the assault of the Russian military.
"Despite the chemical attack, the soldiers of the State Border Guard Service and the Armed Forces repelled the enemy's assault on the Avdiivka axis," the message said.
The assault on Ukrainian positions was reportedly preceded by artillery fire.
"The enemy forces dropped ammunition with irritant aerosols from drones," the report adds.
“Then the occupiers, supported by tanks and armored vehicles, launched an attack.”
The State Border Guard Service notes that the battle lasted about 10 hours. During this time, Ukrainian defenders destroyed 30 enemy troops, two tanks, an infantry fighting vehicle, and an armored personnel carrier.
