Ukraine’s intelligence services are close to identifying the Russian soldiers seen in a horrifying video of the beheading of Ukrainian prisoner of war with a knife while he was still alive, Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said on April 13.

Speaking to Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, the ombudsman said he had recently spoken with intelligence officials.

“According to their assumptions, they’ve almost identified those who did it, in which area and who was directly involved in it – including the executor,” he said.

Lubinets refused to disclose more details, including any more information about the execution of the Ukrainian soldier by fighters of the Wagner Group private military company.

A video was posted on pro-war Russian Telegram channels on April 11 showing Russian troops executing a Ukrainian soldier, allegedly by decapitating him alive with a knife. Ukraine’s SBU security service has launched an investigation.

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar asked not to reveal the soldier’s identity until official information is available.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on world leaders to respond to Russian atrocities.
