The Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) successfully conducted an operation to release and evacuate Ukrainian citizens held captive in appalling conditions in Syria, Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Culture reported on Telegram on March 17.
Military intelligence operatives managed to rescue eight Ukrainian citizens — two women and six children. The group crossed the state border under the cover of darkness in the daring night operation.
“Even in the conditions of Russia’s aggressive war, Ukraine does not forget about its citizens in trouble and will come to their rescue in any part of the globe,” the agency said.
The head of Ukrainian intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, has previously revealed that a significant proportion of Ukrainian citizens in Russian captivity are civilians. He stressed that Ukraine does not capture civilians.
