Ukrainian Joint Forces on Dec. 30 captured the leader of a group of Russian proxy forces from the non-government-controlled part of Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine’s SBU Security Service has reported.

SBU did not name the prisoner, but said he had obtained Russian citizenship in 2020. The suspect was arrested after crossing the front line in Luhansk Oblast. He was wearing a Russian military uniform and had apparently lost his bearings and ended up near a Ukrainian Amy position by accident, the security service said.

Ukrainian law enforcers later discovered that the prisoner had commanded a motor rifle squad that had fired on Ukrainian forces, the SBU said.

The suspect is currently in custody. He may face up to eight years in prison for being a member of an illegal armed group.
