Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio leaving the Five Star Movement – an Italian political party that refuses to support military aid to Ukraine – is a “power move,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said in a Twitter post on June 22.

“Today, every politician is choosing how they will be remembered in the history books,” said Podolyak.

“Italian politics is Italy’s own business. But we will always be grateful to everyone who sides with a just cause – Ukraine’s.”

According to Podolyak, Di Maio has clearly demonstrated that he is a leader who understands the scope of the challenge Europe is facing.

Italian news outlet Il Sole 24 Ore reported that over 60 MPs have left the Five Star Movement along with the minister, creating a major rift in the Italian parliament. They reportedly plan to create a parliamentary group of their own.
