Ukrzaliznytsia is considering introducing 'ladies only' train compartments, the
press center reported on May 23.
The process is at the testing stage as of now.
The initiative was launched in order to provide a safer and more comfortable service for rail passengers. It includes the following stages:
- Developing of relevant software
- Amending the regulations
- Consulting with lawyers and international and Ukrainian public organizations.
The pilot project will be tested for several months before a decision on scaling up will be made based on demand, Evgeny Lyashchenko the head of Ukrzaliznytsia said.
Tickets to ladies-only compartments will be initially available only via Ukrzaliznytsia's app. They will be introduced on several long-distance trains.
Ukraine proposed this service back in 2010, but it was not in demand as the tickets were only available at ticket offices, the press office said.
The idea of creating separate compartments for women in Ukraine was raised again a few days ago. A girl on Twitter said that she was supposed to travel in a compartment with three men, but she was worried about her safety and so she moved to another one. Many social media users supported her and shared their experiences.
A relevant petition was registered on the website of the Ukrainian government on May 15. It asked for at least one separate carriage for women and men on Ukrzaliznytsia trains that take more than six hours to travel.
