UN Human Right Council launches probe of Russian invasion of Ukraine
The UN Human Rights Council voted to establish an independent international commission of inquiry into alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine, on March 4.
The vote is seen as a major diplomatic blow to Russia, whose position was supported only by Eritrea, and opposed by 32 other members of the council.
“I welcome UN Human Right Council establishing an international commission to investigate instances of Russian war crimes against Ukrainians,” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a tweet.
“Documented evidence will be used in international courts; Russian war criminals will be brought to justice.”
Russia has shelled numerous residential and civilian structures during their invasion of Ukraine, resulting in the death of at least 2,000 civilians.
