The U.S. Department of Defense has apparently overvalued the cost of military equipment it has sent to Ukraine by around $3 billion, Reuters reported on May 18.

Eliminating the accounting error opens up the possibility of sending more weapons to Ukraine, according to the report.

Two high-ranking Pentagon officials said that the mistake was due to an overestimation of the value of weapons taken from existing U.S. stocks and delivered to Ukraine.

"We've discovered inconsistencies in how we value the equipment that we've given," said one of the officials.

Furthermore, an aide to an unnamed senator said that Congress will be informed about these accounting corrections on May 18.

The source added that the margin of overvalued equipment may increase as the Pentagon continues the audit, possible pushing the figure of freed up funds beyond $3 billion.
