EU chief reacts to Radev’s victory in Bulgaria’s parliamentary vote

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Rumen Radev on his victory in Bulgaria’s snap parliamentary elections held on Apr. 19, she said in a post on X on Apr. 20.
“I congratulate Rumen Radev on his victory in the parliamentary elections,” von der Leyen said in a statement.
She added that she looks forward to working with Radev for the prosperity and security of Bulgaria and Europe.
With 98.78% of the vote counted, the Progressive Bulgaria party led by former president and euroskeptic Rumen Radev is leading in Bulgaria’s snap parliamentary elections, with about 44.7% of the vote, according to data from the Central Election Commission on Monday, April 20.
After voting in Sofia on April 19, Radev called for a “democratic, modern, European Bulgaria” and said he hoped for “pragmatic relations with Russia based on mutual respect and equal treatment.”
