The Pentagon has made progress in procuring NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine, but has not specified the terms of delivery of these weapons, stated a senior Defense Department official at a briefing on July 29.
"I do not have the detailed information on the specifics of the contracting process but we are already in the process of procuring the system," he said.
The Pentagon representative said that the United States took up the issue of purchasing NASAMS systems for Ukraine after the announcement of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative on July 1.
The U.S. Department of Defense said the allocation of the military aid to Ukraine, the 14th package worth $820 million, would include NASAMS air defense systems.
Ukraine has been requesting that its allies provide it with weapons, including air defense systems, since before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 23.
