Russia or “pro-Russian elements” are likely behind the recent leak of classified U.S. documents detailing the status of the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported on April 7, citing three sources among U.S. officials.
According to the sources, the content of the documents appears to have been altered before being picked up Moscow’s propaganda, downplaying Russian casualty numbers. U.S. Department of Defense has declined to comment on the authenticity of the documents.
On April 6, The New York Times, citing sources in the White House, reported that the Pentagon was investigating a leak of classified documents relating to U.S. and NATO efforts to prepare the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the coming counteroffensive. Recently, classified materials dated March 1 appeared on Twitter, Telegram, and across other social media and messenger apps.
Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said the published documents were doctored, and called them a “pseudo-leak” from Russia.
Ukrainian Defense Intelligence spokesman Andriy Yusov also said that the documents were forged by Russian special services. He pointed out that the documents contain false data on combat losses for both sides, with some of the information gathered from open sources.
