The United States supports Kyiv's efforts to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a briefing on Aug. 9.
"We support Ukraine's efforts, as you know, to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity," the White House spokeswoman said when asked if Washington considers Crimea a legitimate target for Ukraine to strike with US-provided weapons.
This comes after several huge explosions rocked a Russian-occupied air base in Ukraine’s Crimea. Russia started its military occupation of this Ukrainian territory in 2014.
Earlier, the so-called "health ministry" of the occupied peninsula announced that the number of victims "as a result of the incident" in Novofedorivka had increased to nine.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine also commented on the explosions at the Saky airfield in the occupied Crimea. The agency noted that it could not establish the cause of the fire on the territory of the airport, but noted the importance of observing “fire safety rules, and the prohibition on smoking in undesignated areas.”
