It will take ten weeks in the United States for Ukrainian soldiers to train in operating Patriot air defense systems, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said during an official event on Jan. 17.

The minister added that Ukraine’s recent successes on the battlefield would have been impossible without Western assistance.

“Previously we couldn’t even dream of getting, for example, Patriot SAMs, which cost $1 billion each and take 10 months to train on,” said Reznikov.

“Now we have a commitment to get our officers trained (to use Patriot) in 10 weeks.”

On Jan. 16, Ukrainian troops arrived in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where they will begin learning to operate Patriot batteries. The training course is going to be abridged, focusing mainly on combat operations at the expense of lengthy maintenance routines.

Since late December 2022, the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands announced they will transfer three Patriot batteries to Ukraine, helping Kyiv to defend against continued Russian missile strikes on the country’s power grid.
