During a phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden on March 18, China’s President Xi Jinping said that conflict and wars, like the one currently raging in Ukraine, are against everyone’s interests, Reuters has reported.

International relations should never cross into open confrontations, which are contrary to everybody’s interests, said Jinping.

“The Ukrainian crisis is not something we want to see,” said the Chinese president.

He added that both China and the United States should correctly align their bilateral relationship, and take up joint responsibility to maintain world peace.

Earlier reports in U.S. media suggested that Russia requested China’s economic and military help in its war against Ukraine. Both Moscow and Beijing have denied these claims.

The United States has warned China against providing Russia with such assistance. Additionally, the Chinese ambassador to Ukraine has provided a guarantee that China would never attack Ukraine, and would instead provide aid to the country.
