The United States expects the Armed Forces of Ukraine to launch a counteroffensive against Russian positions in the coming weeks, Permanent U.S. Representative to NATO, Julianne Smith, said at a press briefing on April 3, as reported by news agency Ukrinform.

“We expect the Ukrainians to advance or launch their own spring offensive in the coming weeks,” said Smith, adding that it’s up to Ukraine to determine exact timing and tactics.

According to her, Russia is also showing attempts to launch a new offensive, but it is unlikely to bring substantial gains on the battlefield.

On March 29, Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that the Ukrainian counter-offensive should begin in April or May 2023, on several axes.

On Feb. 28, Ukrainian Military Intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said the next three months in Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine would be “very active” and will determine the further course of events in the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russian troops still have time to withdraw from Ukraine, or be destroyed otherwise.
