World leaders ought to work on establishing mechanisms to channel seized Russian assets into securing Ukraine’s post-war recovery, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address on April 12.

“Ukraine won’t become a ruin; our goal is to prevent that,” said Zelenskyy.

“That will become the definitive proof of the defeat of the terrorist state (Russia). Especially since the world has the solution – regarding the assets belonging to Russia, Russian officials, oligarchs who enriched themselves as their state slid towards terrorism… All these assets must be used to compensate those Russia inflicted pain and suffering upon.”

According to the president, Ukrainian recovery was discussed at a special meeting dedicated to international financial assistance to Kyiv earlier on April 12.

“I just participated in a meeting (focused on) financial support for Ukraine,” he added.

“The event is taking place in Washington and brings together finance minister of resilient global democracies – our partners, the European Commission, heads of international financial institutions: the IMF, World Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.”

In late March, Ukrainian PM Denys Shmyhal said it would take $411 billion to finance Ukraine’s comprehensive post-war recovery.
