Six residents of military age have been caught in a forest in Zakarpattia Oblast while attempting to cross Ukraine’s border with Romania, the State Border Guard Service reported on Sept. 1.
The border guards spotted the men moving through the forest at night. They claimed that they were collecting mushrooms.
However, the “mushroom hunters” all happened to have their international passports on them, as well as COVID certificates and a change of clothes.
The border guards spotted the six men near the village of Shchaul of the Rakhiv district. The violators were detained after border guards fired several warning shots.
The men were taken to a border unit to find out all the circumstances of the offense.
They were served with charges under Article 336 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (evasion of conscription for mobilization).
The Verkhovyna district court in Zakarpattia Oblast recently fined a local resident who, while picking blueberries, claimed to have got lost in the fog and crossed the border into Romania.
