Zelensky’s office says IAEA losing contact with Chornobyl NPP is ‘serious situation’
The International Atomic Energy Agency losing contact with control systems at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant – which has been captured by Russian troops – is a very dangerous situation, the Office of the President of Ukraine said on March 9.
Adviser to Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief-of-staff Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on Twitter that the extent of the risks facing the region from a further accident at the plant was unknown.
“The IAEA unexpectedly lost contact with the safeguards system at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant,” Podolyak tweeted. “And that is why now no one understands what is happening in Chornobyl, who and what is doing there, and to what extent it puts the region at risk. A very dangerous situation.”
Soon after his tweet Ukraine's state energy company Ukrenergo has reported Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant has been completely disconnected from the power grid.
