U.S. political news outlet Politico has named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the most influential person in Europe in 2022.
According to the news outlet, Europe is changing and is rethinking what it means to be European – and that’s largely because of Ukraine’s comedian-turned-president.
“Just look at how European leaders flagging in the polls run to Kyiv for a photo-op with the solemn-looking 44-year-old in his now iconic olive green T-shirt. Standing at his side is how politicians yearn to be seen,” the report says.
The journalists stressed that what Zelenskyy has done is convince the rest of Europe that its future is tied to Ukraine’s. He got “the authority to make Europe do what he wants.”
The 2022 ranking also includes Russian dictator Vladimir Putin (The loser), Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán (The enemy within), and President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (The wild card).
The list was compiled by drawing on the expertise and insights of POLITICO’s journalists and the power players they talk to.
