The European Union was prepared to halt the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine on January 1, 2025, according to the European Commission, Suspilne reports.

The European Commission said it has been working with EU member states for over a year to prepare for the potential halt of Russian gas transit.

They developed measures to ensure alternative gas supplies for affected countries, noting that Europe’s gas infrastructure is flexible enough to deliver non-Russian gas to Central Eastern European nations via alternative routes.

Since 2022, significant new LNG import capacities have been added.

The EU's gas supply network has been further strengthened by increased energy efficiency and a push for renewable energy.

On Jan. 1, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy announced that, for national security reasons, it halted Russian gas transit at 7 a.m.

The country informed international partners in the proper manner.

Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko emphasized that Ukraine had completed all necessary preparations and is "absolutely ready for the system to function without Russian gas."
