The European Commission plans to reintroduce tariffs on
Ukrainian eggs, and possibly sugar, within the next two weeks as Ukraine has
already exhausted its export quotas for these products in the EU, Euronews
reported on June 19.
Citing a statement from a Commission representative, the report said Kyiv’s annual quota for sugar exports to the EU was completely tapped out in May.
"We cannot speculate on the future import rates," another Commission representative said.
Meanwhile, the EU’s food industry association expressed concerns about limiting the import volumes of these products. They stated that in the coming years, the supply of sugar might not be sufficient to meet domestic European demand.
The European Union temporarily suspended tariffs for Ukrainian exports until June 2025 but reserves the right to impose restrictions if import volumes of certain product categories exceed the average figures recorded between July 1, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2023.
