IAEA assesses damage to critical substations caused by Russian attacks, says Energy Ministry

IAEA experts documented damage to electrical substations caused by Russian attacks in November and December, comparing the intensity and impact of the strikes, Ukraine's Energy Ministry reported.

The experts also assessed restoration efforts and the operational state of the substations, which are critical to Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.

“Russia’s strikes on civilian energy infrastructure, including key substations, pose a direct threat to nuclear and radiation safety across Europe,” Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said, emphasizing the importance of international monitoring to document the damage and its risks.

IAEA experts have been monitoring critical substations since September under an expanded mission.

Following the December 13 attack, five of Ukraine’s nine nuclear power units were downgraded.

Previous attacks in August and November also forced nuclear power plants to scale back operations as a precaution.
