Naftogaz locks in long-term European LNG access for energy independence

The agreement will provide access to the LNG terminal in Klaipėda, Lithuania, from 2033 to 2044.

“Naftogaz was one of five companies that secured the right to use the terminal on a long-term basis. The other successful participants were Equinor, Ignitis, Latvenergo and Gasum,” the statement read.

“For Ukraine, this is an important step toward diversifying natural gas supply sources and routes, as well as strengthening the country’s energy security.”

The statement pointed out that this agreement opens up new opportunities for Naftogaz in terms of long-term supply planning and participation in the global LNG market.

Naftogaz earlier carried out similar operations in cooperation with international companies.

“This marks a new level of cooperation and supply planning. Decisions like this are strategically important for Ukraine’s energy security. They expand our access to the global LNG market and strengthen the long-term resilience of Ukraine’s gas supply,” said Naftogaz CEO Serhii Koretskyi.

“I would like to thank the Government of Ukraine and our Lithuanian partners for their cooperation and trust. This is another important step toward strengthening the energy security of Ukraine and the wider European region.”

Naftogaz began importing U.S. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) into Ukraine through the Klaipėda terminal in Lithuania for the first time in February.

Naftogaz Group, in partnership with TotalEnergies, secured supplies of liquefied natural gas from the United States via the Deutsche ReGas LNG terminal located on the island of Rügen, Germany, in the Baltic Sea.
