Ukraine is moving forward with plans to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs), with 12 potential sites already identified by Energoatom and Ukrenergo. A formal agreement or memorandum on beginning work is expected soon, officials said.
“We are also ready to allocate land plots for the placement of small modular reactors for Energoatom,” a representative stated, adding that this initiative is part of a broader national energy strategy.
Ukraine also plans to establish facilities to produce nuclear systems, reactor components, and infrastructure for spent nuclear fuel storage and transport.
The move follows global momentum for SMRs, including a February 12, 2025 memorandum between France and India to partner on advanced modular reactor construction and secure long-term gas supplies.
