Ukraine’s State Agency for the Restoration and Development (SARD) signed a memorandum of cooperation with SG, a leading South Korean asphalt concrete producer, SARD announced on May 19.

The agency said it first met representatives from Korean companies POSCO International and SG in January. Since then, officials have held several meetings and planned joint projects, including building thermal power plants using refuse-derived fuel.

“Now we have signed the memorandum with SG; we will benefit from Korea’s 10 years of experience with the EcoSteel Ascon technology,” said SARD head Serhii Sukhomlyn.

Sukhomlyn explained that EcoSteel Ascon is an eco-friendly asphalt paving technology designed to extend the lifecycle of road surfaces by incorporating metallurgical slag—a byproduct of the steel industry. The agency plans to exchange technologies and implement joint projects, including work on highways such as R-55 in Odesa and Mykolayiv oblasts.
