Europe faces aviation fuel shortage

airports face a “systemic” jet fuel shortage if the Strait of Hormuz is not
fully reopened within three weeks, Airports Council International Europe (ACI
Europe) warned, as reported
by the Financial Times on April 10.
In a letter to EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, ACI Europe said supplies were being depleted and that the “impact of military activity on demand” was worsening delivery problems. The airport trade group urged the EU to closely monitor supplies and take action.
Business groups told the commissioner there is “increasing concerns of the airport industry over the availability of jet fuel as well as the need for proactive EU monitoring and action.”
“If the passage through the Strait of Hormuz does not resume in any significant and stable way within the next three weeks, systemic jet fuel shortage is set to become a reality for the EU,” the FT quoted the letter.
Industry representatives also warned that the warning comes ahead of the peak summer travel season, which supports the broader tourism ecosystem across the European Union.
Some Asian countries, such as Vietnam, have already started
rationing jet fuel because of shortages. Europe has not seen such large-scale
rationing yet, but fuel prices have roughly doubled, and airlines have warned
they may cancel flights.
