Poland moves to prevent future blockades of the Ukrainian border
The Polish government has designated border checkpoints as critical infrastructure to prevent potential blockades of the Polish-Ukrainian border, said Paweł Kowal, chair of the Sejm's Committee on Foreign Affairs and Council for Cooperation with Ukraine, Rzeczpospolita reported on Jan. 28.
The Polish government has expanded its list of critical infrastructure to include border checkpoints, aiming to minimize disruptions from protests at the Polish-Ukrainian border, Rzeczpospolita reported.
Paweł Kowal, chair of the Sejm's Foreign Affairs Committee, noted that the updated regulations have slightly reduced the impact of recent demonstrations but emphasized that farmers in Poland and across the EU will always seek ways to stage protests that pressure authorities.
Governments, he added, will continue working to contain such actions within legal limits.
Earlier, Roman Kondrów, a leader of the protests, warned that the temporary cessation of border blockades by Polish farmers may end, with larger demonstrations possible.
This followed a meeting with Poland’s Minister of Agriculture, Czesław Sekerski, where farmers were invited to present their demands to the ministry.
Reports indicate that the EU-South American trade deal with Mercosur sparked the renewed border blockades on Nov. 23–24.
