DTEK clarifies difference between scheduled outages and blackouts
Ukrainian power infrastructure can prevent a blackout from potential damage caused by Russian shelling, DTEK executive director Dmytro Saharuk said at a European Business Association event, Interfax-Ukraine reports on Sept. 18.
Dmytro Saharuk, executive director of DTEK, said that while controlled power outages will vary depending on damage and recovery time, a complete blackout remains unlikely due to measures taken over the past 2.5 years.
Saharuk explained that scheduled or emergency shutdowns, implemented by NEC Ukrenergo, are not blackouts but safeguards to prevent system failure after Russian attacks.
He noted that effective air defense is crucial for protecting energy facilities, as multiple direct hits could overwhelm defenses.
Recent attacks have severely damaged Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with significant losses reported by DTEK and other energy providers.
