Ukrainian Railways (UZ) and Moldova’s state rail operator CFM are negotiating a 50% reduction in transit tariffs for Ukrainian cargo as Russia continues to effectively blockade Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, RAIL.insider reported on Aug. 6.

The request for the tariff cut was reportedly discussed during an online meeting between UZ executives and major Ukrainian agricultural producers.

“We are indeed asking for a 50% discount on the transit tariff through Moldova,” said Valeriy Tkachov, deputy director of UZ Department of Transport Technology and Commercial Operations. He said talks are taking place at both ministry level and between the two rail companies. Tkachov added that the carrier’s main concern is the volume of shipments Ukrainian customers will provide.

The negotiations also cover technical aspects of the potential deal. The CFM has complained about a shortage of locomotives and has asked that UZ provide locomotives to haul trains across Moldovan territory, Tkachov said.

He added that talks are ongoing and that the company will announce results as soon as they are available.
