Maksym Butchenko

Journalist at NV Magazine's National Desk | Security and Defense Analyst at NV.ua

Focus & Expertise

I am a reporter covering the war, security policy, and social transformations in Ukraine. My daily work focuses on the wartime economy, the inner workings of the Russian government, and the harsh realities of life under occupation. By combining on-the-ground reporting with deep historical context, I aim to connect grand political narratives with deeply personal human stories.

Professional Experience

I have been a journalist since the early 2010s. Before joining the NV team in 2014, I worked as a reporter for Korrespondent and Focus magazines. Over the years, I have authored hundreds of articles and conducted in-depth interviews with military personnel, intelligence officers, and eyewitnesses to the war. Most of my work involves field reporting, verifying complex sources, and covering high-risk topics.

Education

My path to the newsroom was unconventional. Before pursuing a career in media, I studied at a mining technical college and spent years working in the coal industry. With the aim of becoming a professional journalist, I attended Odesa National University and earned my degree in 2011. This practical background continues to shape my social perspective and the way I approach news.

Achievements

In addition to my daily reporting, I am an established author of fiction and documentary books exploring the war and Ukrainian history. My novels about the Donbas and the modern conflict have been translated and published internationally. Notably, I also wrote The HUR Island (Ostriv HUR, Острів ГУР), a documentary book detailing the operations of Ukraine's military intelligence during the full-scale invasion.

Hobbies

When I am not in the newsroom, I spend my time studying 20th-century history, watching military documentaries, and reading non-fiction. I am particularly interested in analyzing political systems and researching historical archives and oral histories.
