Kyiv dam secure against airstrikes, sabotage — Ukrhydroenergo
The Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant is protected from air and internal attacks, Ukrhydroenergo head Ihor Syrota said on national television on June 8 in the aftermath of Russia’s demolition of the Kakhovka HPP in southern Ukraine.
He stressed that the Russian forces could not reach the plant even when they were just five kilometers away in Dmytrivka.
"They won't be able to do anything to the plant today," he said.
Nova Kakhovka dam breach — what is known
During the night of June 6, Russian forces that have occupied the town of Nova Kakhovka for over a year, blew up the dam, flooding downstream cities and towns along the Dnipro River, including the reginal capital of Kherson, Ukrainian authorities say.
The evacuation of citizens on the west bank of the Dnipro River has been ongoing throughout the night. A humanitarian disaster is underway on the Russian-occupied east bank, which has seen far more devastation due to its lower elevation.
At an urgent meeting of the National Security and Defense Council, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered the evacuation of at-risk areas and the provision of drinking water to towns and villages served by the affected Kakhovka Reservoir.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
