UEFA plans criminal complaint against Infantino

UEFA is preparing to file a criminal complaint in
Switzerland against FIFA
President Gianni Infantino over his failed FIFA Forward Enterprise plan, The
Guardian reported
on Aug. 27.
The European soccer organization has also requested documents related to the initiative. The Guardian reported that UEFA and other interested parties may approach Swiss law enforcement with a complaint against Infantino and other FIFA officials over possible criminal mismanagement.
The allegations concern Infantino’s plan to sell a 20% stake in FIFA tournament rights for $4.2 billion. Court documents say the project was valued at about $20 billion without an open competitive auction or an independent appraisal.
UEFA lawyers have also demanded that FIFA preserve all documents and electronic information related to the project. Fourteen executives were identified as responsible for ensuring that the materials are retained.
UEFA previously threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments with the participation of its 55 national associations. CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation also opposed the project. Infantino eventually abandoned the plan.
Afterward, UEFA said it had lost confidence in FIFA’s
leadership and called for those responsible for the project to be held
accountable. Norway’s soccer federation also called on Infantino to resign.
