Alina Perehudova, the under-17 champion of Ukraine at weightlifting in the weight category up to 40 kilograms, has been killed in Mariupol.

It is reported that the promising athlete, who was only 14 years old, died in a Russian shelling attack in which her mother also died.

Perehudova was a pupil of the Donetsk weightlifting school and was a candidate to join the national team of Ukraine.

The Department of Physical Culture and Sports of the Donetsk Regional StateAdministration has expressed condolences over Alina's death.

Earlier in Mariupol, the grandparents of the 2012 Olympic Games champion gymnast Ihor Radyvilov were reported to have been killed.

It was also reported that a young Ukrainian gymnast, Kateryna Diachenko, was also killed in a Russian shelling attack on Mariupol.
