18 former female prisoners join Armed Forces as gunners and nurses
Eighteen women who received amnesty and were released from prison have already joined the Armed Forces and are participating in hostilities, according to the Main Directorate of Communications of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in response to a request from hromadske on Aug. 7.
It has been specified that all 18 former female prisoners are now serving in units of the Ground Forces. They have completed basic military training and have been assigned positions as gunners and nurses.
The Armed Forces report that these military personnel are already taking part in hostilities.
Mobilization of Convicts in Ukraine
In May, Deputy Minister of Justice Olena Vysotska announced that 4,500 convicts had agreed to parole by signing a contract for military service.
On May 8, the Verkhovna Rada passed draft law No. 11079-1 in its second reading, allowing certain categories of prisoners to mobilize into the Armed Forces. This can occur only after a court decision and must be voluntary. Those convicted of aggravated premeditated murder, rape, sexual violence, crimes against national security, and similar offenses cannot be mobilized.
The Servant of the People party clarified that convicted corrupt officials and individuals who held particularly responsible positions, such as deputies and ministers, will not be able to join the Armed Forces.
Prisoners eligible for potential mobilization must have no more than three years remaining on their sentences.
The potential mobilization resource among prisoners in Ukraine is 15-20 thousand people, although it is expected that only several thousand will sign the contract, according to Servant of the People party head, David Arakhamia.
