21 explosive devices found near German power grid facilities

Authorities in the eastern German
state of Saxony found 21 improvised explosive devices near local energy
infrastructure sites, including high-voltage power lines, Tagesschau reported
on Sept. 7, citing the Dresden prosecutor’s office and Saxony’s criminal police
department.
According to investigators, the devices were found near the Graustein substation near Schleife, in the Görlitz district. Authorities believe they may have been designed to damage the energy infrastructure by causing short circuits.
Saxon authorities have neutralized the devices. Police said they found no actual damage to the power grid and reported no disruptions to the power grid.
Investigators also received a letter in which unknown individuals claimed responsibility for possible similar actions in Saxony. The people involved in placing the devices have not been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.
On Sept. 1, explosive devices were found near the Jänschwalde coal-fired power plant in Brandenburg, one of Germany’s largest. The incident forced a 500-megawatt unit offline. Brandenburg Infrastructure Minister Robert Crumbach called the damage to the energy facility a terrorist attack.
On Sept. 2, German newspapers Bild and Der Spiegel reported that authorities had found six pyrotechnic launch devices in a field near Bergheim, outside Cologne. The devices were designed to use pyrotechnics to raise a wire over power lines.
On Sept. 4, police in Dormagen, in the western state
of North Rhine-Westphalia, said they were investigating suspected sabotage at a
local electrical substation.
