56 Ukrainians missing after deadly flash flood in Nepal

As of 10:30 p.m. Kyiv time Aug. 27, authorities had lost
contact with 56 Ukrainian citizens in the disaster
zone in Nepal, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry told NV.
The ministry said the list of Ukrainians reported missing grew by one on Aug. 27 after another Ukrainian citizen who was traveling with an international tourist group could not be reached.
“At the same time, according to verified information available to us, no Ukrainians are currently listed among those injured or killed in the disaster,” the ministry said.
“Nepal’s army and police continue search-and-rescue operations, with about 15 helicopters involved.”
Flooding in Nepal and Tibet, where thousands of pilgrims from various countries were staying, was caused by a glacier collapse on Aug. 26, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Debris surged downstream, and the water level at one point along the Trishuli River rose 9 meters in 30 minutes.
The most severe flooding was reported along the Lhende Khola River, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River that originates in the mountains of Tibet.
As of the morning of Aug. 27, at least 168 people had been reported killed in the disaster. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 826 people were missing, including about 500 tourists.
China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported that 260 of the 558
people missing in Tibet were foreigners.
