AfD leads in Germany as Merz bloc falls to lowest support in years — poll

The far-right, pro-Russia Alternative for Germany has become
the country’s most popular party, overtaking Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s
CDU/CSU bloc as voter dissatisfaction with his coalition government grows,
according to a YouGov poll reported by Die
Welt.
AfD was backed by 27% of respondents, up 1 percentage point
from March. Merz’s conservative alliance fell 3 points to 23% — its lowest
level since December 2021.
Support for the Social Democrats stood at 13%, while the
Greens polled at 14% and the Left Party at 10%.
The survey also found rising public frustration with the
government. Some 79% of respondents said they were dissatisfied with its
performance, compared with 55% in June 2025.
YouGov surveyed 2,178 voters from April 10 to April 13. The
margin of error was 2.5 percentage points.
The new poll follows signs of a tightening race in recent
weeks. In late March, CDU/CSU and AfD were tied at 26%, according to a separate
Insa poll. In late February, Merz’s bloc had edged ahead of AfD for the first
time since September, with 26% support to AfD’s 25%.
