Armenia may suspend its CSTO membership
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has signaled he could suspend his country's participation in the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Armenia News reported on Feb. 28.
Contrary to its purpose, CSTO introduces additional security risks for the country, he suggested.
"Instead of fulfilling its security obligations to Armenia, CSTO, on the contrary, creates security problems," Pashinyan said in response to a question from an Armenian MP.
“And this position, to put it bluntly, is a threat to Armenia's national security.”
Armenia has not had a permanent representative in CSTO for a year and has not participated in high-level joint events for quite some time.
"Of course, CSTO is based on the principle of consensus in decision-making, so we do not block anything, but we do not participate for a simple reason: we do not have an answer to the question of why we should participate," the PM added.
If the situation does not change, Armenia could legally suspend its membership in the security bloc, according to Pashinyan.
On Feb. 23, Pashinyan that Armenia had "frozen" its participation in CSTO.
