Arms procurement expenses to become protected from budget sequestering

The Ukrainian government plans to expand the list of protected budgetary expenses to include funding for weapons and ammunition production, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on Sept. 26.

Shmyhal stated that relevant ministries have been tasked with drafting legislative amendments to ensure that defense contracts are not subject to cuts in any revisions of the state budget.

"Specifically, it is necessary to classify the funding of weapons and military equipment production as protected budget items," the PM said in a Telegram post.

He added that this move would help Ukraine’s defense industry grow sustainably, as their revenue from state contracts will become stable and predictable.

Currently, protected budgetary expenses include government spending on medicine, food, and salaries for employees of state institutions.
