As Kursk advance slows down, Ukrainian troops dig in
Ukrainian troops are encountering resistance when advancing deeper into Russia’s Kursk Oblast, and are now fortifying their positions in some directions, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported on Aug. 13.
Sources among the troops participating in the operation told the journalists that the city of Sudzha is under Ukrainian control, but the industrial area of the city has yet to be fully secured. An official statement on complete seizure of the city is expected soon.
Ukrainian forces have also advanced through the settlements of Kolmakov, Martynivka, Russkoye Porechnoye, and Pogrebki.
Locals in these areas are few, and they are "slightly resentful" of the actions of Ukrainian troops, according to a source.
“In the villages, some are trying to resist using hunting weapons,” a military official said.
“There is strong resistance in the direction of Kursk [City], making further advancement difficult.”
In some sectors, the Ukrainian military is now establishing fortified positions.
On Aug. 11, Forbes reported that Ukrainian forces are fortifying their positions in Russia's Kursk Oblast, indicating they do not intend to leave the area.
Sources told the publication that both Ukrainian and Russian troops have started digging trenches, with excavators spotted on both sides of the front in the region.
