The Greek government has extended the temporary protection status for Ukrainian asylum seekers until Mar. 4, 2024, the Ukrainian Ombudsman's office announced on Facebook on Sept. 25.

The Greek Migration and Asylum Ministry officially confirmed that the validity of residence permits under the temporary protection arrangement will be automatically extended. This applies not only to those who have already received temporary residence permits, but also to Ukrainians entering the country for the first time.

Those who have received temporary residence permits will not have to renew them and can continue to access state health care, education, and the right to temporary housing in the Sintica shelter.

The Council of the European Union, based on a recommendation from the European Commission, is expected on Sept. 28 to extend the temporary protection status for Ukrainian refugees until 2025.

Poland was the only country to oppose the extension of temporary protection, as Warsaw is demanding increased EU funding to assist Ukrainian refugees, RFE/RL reported, citing sources.
