Austria has formally notified the Council of Europe of its readiness to join an expanded agreement on the steering committee for a special tribunal on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha said on Apr. 16.

He noted that Austria’s decision brings the total number of countries willing to participate in the Special Tribunal to 20, including 19 member states of the Council of Europe. The document on the legal framework of the tribunal on Russia can now be put to a vote at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, scheduled to take place in Chisinau on May 14–15.

“Each new participant reinforces the truth: justice for the crime of aggression against Ukraine is inevitable. These historic efforts to ensure accountability strengthen our position and respect for international law worldwide,” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.

On April 15, Ukraine’s foreign minister said France had joined the Enlarged Partial Agreement on the Steering Committee of the Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

On April 14, Sybiha said Iceland and Poland had confirmed their readiness to join the agreement and that, with confirmations from 17 countries at that time, Ukraine had officially crossed the minimum legal threshold required to put the agreement to a vote.
