Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian
oil refineries are driving up global energy prices, eventually reflecting
on the cost of U.S. gasoline, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sept. 2.
He made the comments in an interview with Fox News.
“Ukraine has decided that they want to blow up Russian energy assets and refined products,” Bessent said.
“So that is creating upward price pressure on a global basis.”
He also acknowledged the impact of the Iran war on oil markets, adding that U.S. gas prices would go down after the war ends. The secretary did not provide an estimate of when that might happen.
Ukrainian drones have been targeting Russian refining capacity
for months, with attacks intensifying starting in June. The latest drone
strike, targeting the Kstovo refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, took
place on Aug. 26.
