Currently, US President Joe Biden is not planning a visit to Kyiv amid the ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, American newspaper Politico wrote on Dec. 18, citing sources in the White House.
According to the publication’s sources, this decision was made for security reasons.
“There is growing concern in both nations’ capitals as to what the next phase of the war will hold,” Politico wrote.
The counter-offensive of the Armed Forces stopped in the east and south of the country, and winter and frost allowed the Russian troops to consolidate their positions.
In view of this, representatives of the defense structures of Ukraine warned that Russia may be preparing a new large-scale offensive in the coming months, and Kyiv was named as one of the directions.
The White House says that Biden will have to persuade European leaders to maintain a course of support for Ukraine amid the deteriorating economic situation in the region.
Many world leaders have already visited Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion. Some have already come to Kyiv several times to confirm their support in the fight against Russian aggression. Such visits were often accompanied by Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
The possibility of Biden’s visit to Ukraine has been discussed since the first months of the Russian attack.
“Currently, there are no plans for Biden to visit Kyiv, mainly because of security risks, according to several White House officials. But Biden spoke last week to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who urged his American counterpart to continue the flow of air defense weapons,” Politico wrote.
President Zelensky said in July that the visit of the American leader would be an important signal of support for Ukraine and faith in victory in the war with Russia.
Before that, in May, the White House announced that they are not yet planning a visit to Ukraine by President Joe Biden, despite his desire to make such a trip.
At the same time, Biden supports Kyiv, allocating multibillion-dollar aid to Ukrainians.
