Kyiv residents should prepare for possible blackouts until spring 2023, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said in an interview with Ukrainian media outlet RBC-Ukraine published on Nov. 28, noting that low temperatures increase the load on the power system.
"We are trying to restore everything as quickly as possible, to switch to clear schedules so that there are no surprises, and then to switch to uninterrupted electricity supply,” the official explained.
“But we must be prepared for the fact that there may be outages until spring. This is also due to low temperatures, many people have heating devices – some have underfloor heating, and some have UV [heaters]. People always consume more electricity in cold weather. Therefore, there is a greater load on the power system.”
Speaking about the restoration of energy infrastructure, Klitschko noted that the government is working on it.
"This question is more to the specialists – to DTEK company,” the mayor added.
“Some equipment has been ordered in the West, it needs to be manufactured, brought to Ukraine, and installed. That is a certain process.”
Due to Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure on Nov. 23, the vast majority of electricity consumers across the country were cut off. In particular, the reactors of all Ukrainian nuclear power plants underwent emergency shutdowns.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Russia is preparing new missile strikes. According to him, the current week may be as difficult as the previous one.
