Cabinet backs new foreign volunteers bill

The Ukrainian government has approved a bill strengthening
legal protections for foreign nationals and stateless people who have joined
Ukraine’s military, PM Sergii Koretskyi said.
He announced the decision on social media on Aug. 28.
Koretskyi said the bill would give foreigners and stateless people more time to resolve their legal status after their military contracts end. The bill would extend the period of legal temporary residence in Ukraine from three months to six months, he specified.
“Military service will count toward the five-year residency requirement for obtaining an immigration permit,” Koretskyi said.
“In addition, the bill would introduce a foreigner’s travel document for people who, because of threats or political circumstances, cannot obtain or renew a passport in their country of origin.”
The Cabinet expects the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) to consider and approve the bill in short order.
On July 3, former PM Yulia Svyrydenko said the
government had approved new procedures for the logistics of foreign volunteers
joining Ukraine’s defense forces, from traveling to Ukraine to signing a
military service contract.
